Description

In the summer of 1913, under the cover of London's perpetual smoggy dusk, two brilliant minds are pitted against each other - a celebrated gentleman thief and a talented Scotland Yard detective - in the greatest jewel heist of the new century.  In the spirit of The Great Train Robbery and the tales of Sherlock Holmes, this is the true story of a psychological cat and mouse game set against the backdrop of London's golden Edwardian era.  Thoroughly researched, compellingly colorful, The Great Pearl Heist is a gripping narrative account of a little-known, yet extraordinary crime.

This non-fiction book reminds me of a movie because the author describes the action taking place as if she were a cinematographer filming this infamous pearl necklace heist and its consequences in 1913 London. In addition, all of the dialogue has been researched and asserted to be accurate and verbatim, and all of the colorful descriptions of events and places have been collected from sources impeccably researched by Caldwell Crosby. If you are captivated by the Edwardian era and its culture, and you admire pictures depicting it such as the Sherlock Holmes TV series on PBS in the 1980s and 1990s, like I am, then I predict you will be wowed by this true tale. Caldwell Crosby has an eye and ear and a writing style that make you think you are in the streets, tea rooms, and salons of London conspiring with the jewel thieves and plotting stings with Scotland Yard. The police procedural itself is somewhat predictable, and the trial is as well, but the intriguing characters involved are what counts, and getting to the finale is immensely entertaining. There are also fascinating notes at the story’s end that enhance the book’s enjoyment. This short true crime story book is a literary confection worth savoring.
